The ability to encourage others

“Therefore, encourage and build one another up, just as you have been doing.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (translated from the Spanish text cited, NVI)

Everyone goes through times when they need a word of encouragement. Family burdens, financial difficulties, illnesses, failures, conflicts, and disappointments can produce weariness and discouragement.

For this reason, Paul urges believers to encourage and build one another up. The Christian life should not focus solely on our personal growth; we are also called to strengthen those who walk beside us.

Paul David Tripp wrote:

“God has designed us to live in community, helping one another see what we cannot see on our own.”

To encourage means approaching others with sensitivity, listening before speaking, recognizing their efforts, and reminding them of God's promises without minimizing their suffering. Initially, some people do not need an explanation, but someone willing to stay close to them.

At home, encouragement has enormous formative power. Children need to hear words that recognize their efforts and abilities; spouses need to express mutual appreciation; older adults need to know that they continue to be valuable. A family that only points out mistakes ends up producing discouragement, while a family that combines correction with affirmation fosters growth.

Jesus restored, strengthened, and gave hope to broken people. Following his example means turning our words and actions into instruments that build others up. Each day, we can ask ourselves who needs a sincere word of hope from us.

Prayer
