Restoration Also Includes Caring for the Body

Restoration Also Includes Caring for the Body

“Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you and whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:19–20

Spiritual growth does not occur apart from the body. Fatigue, lack of sleep, a sedentary lifestyle, irregular eating, and prolonged stress can increase irritability, reduce the ability to concentrate, and make it more difficult to regulate intense emotions.

Paul uses the image of the body as the temple of the Holy Spirit to teach that our physical dimension also belongs to the life of discipleship. Therefore, caring for ourselves is not necessarily selfish; it can be a responsible expression of stewardship. Peter Scazzero says, “Taking care of ourselves is never a selfish act; it is simply good stewardship.” Dallas Willard, in explaining spiritual formation, insists that the body must become an “ally in the formation of a Christlike person.”

This integration is especially important during periods of grief, stress, or emotional reorganization. Sleeping adequately, engaging in physical activity, studying with reasonable schedules, and maintaining a balanced and sufficient diet also help restore emotional stability.

Bodily care does not replace prayer, community, or psychological care when it is necessary; it complements them. Nor should we use physical practices as punishment for feelings or decisions. The body deserves care, not contempt.

An integral spirituality learns to glorify God also through rest, nourishment, movement—exercise and sports—and daily habits that foster a healthy and responsible life.

Reflection Questions

How is my physical condition influencing my emotions?

Insufficient sleep, exhaustion, and stress can increase my emotional vulnerability. Responsibly caring for my body can also strengthen my ability to face difficult situations with serenity.

Am I using my body as an ally or neglecting it during this process?

I need to review my sleep, diet, exercise, rest, and daily habits, understanding that my physical well-being is an important part of the integral care of my whole person.

What concrete change can I begin this week?

I can choose a simple and sustainable goal related to rest, movement, nourishment, or stress management, and practice it consistently without turning it into a perfectionistic demand.

Recommendations

  • Maintain reasonably regular sleep and rest schedules, especially during emotionally intense periods.
  • Include appropriate exercise and healthy recreational activities as part of integral care.
  • Seek professional evaluation when there are persistent changes in sleep, eating, anxiety, mood, or academic and daily functioning.

Prayer

Father, teach me to responsibly care for the life You have given me. Help me honor You with my body, my emotions, my decisions, and my whole existence. Amen.
