Priorities in the Christian Life

The Christian Life and the Ability to Set Priorities
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
— Matthew 6:33
The Christian life requires learning to distinguish between what is urgent, what is important, and what is truly essential. Each day, we face multiple responsibilities related to work, family, finances, studies, and Christian service. However, when our priorities are not properly ordered, we may devote too much time to secondary activities and neglect what has greater spiritual and personal value.
Jesus taught that we must seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. This means recognizing his authority and allowing his principles to guide our decisions, relationships, and projects. Stephen R. Covey said, “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.” This statement highlights the need to organize our lives around fundamental convictions and purposes.
At home, setting priorities means devoting meaningful time to God, cultivating the marital relationship, supporting the development of children, and responsibly addressing family needs. It also involves learning to set boundaries, declining unnecessary commitments, and preventing external demands from displacing our essential responsibilities.
A family that identifies its priorities develops greater balance, strengthens its relationships, and uses its resources responsibly. Christian maturity does not consist of carrying out countless activities, but of recognizing what God considers truly important and acting accordingly.
