Discerning Spiritual Times

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1 (RVR1960)

A worship coordinator must learn to discern not only chronological time, but also spiritual time. Not every moment in a service has the same intensity or purpose: there are times of deep worship, ministry, teaching, and response.

The mistake many coordinators make is treating every moment alike, without perceiving what God is doing.

Rick Warren points out:

“God is more interested in why we do things than in what we do.”

This implies that spiritual sensitivity is more important than the precision of the program.

Henry Blackaby states:

“Find out where God is at work and join Him.”

The coordinator must be attentive to the movements of the Spirit so as not to interrupt what God wants to do. A service guided only by the clock becomes mechanical; one guided only by emotion becomes disorderly. The balance lies in discerning God’s times.

Reflection Questions

Am I attentive to God’s times, or only to the service schedule?

I need to develop spiritual discernment to recognize when to move forward and when to stop.

Do I interrupt spiritual moments in order to follow a program?

I must learn to prioritize the work of the Spirit over human structure.

Am I spiritually prepared to perceive what God wants to do?

Spiritual sensitivity is cultivated through prayer, fasting, and fellowship with God.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to discern Your times in every service. May I not quench Your movement through a lack of sensitivity. Guide me to flow according to Your will. Amen.
